A Brief Account on Swami Sivananda’s Journey and Legacy of Yoga 

India is huge country with lots of diversity pertaining to religious and spiritual practices and yoga is one of the most prominent practice regarding spiritualty and overall wellbeing of humans. This I the very reason why we can find a great number of famous yogis in India when we talk about India yoga. Among such great names, one well-known is of Swami Sivananda.

Swami Sivananda, born as Kuppuswami on September 8 I the year 1887 in Pattamadai, India.  He was well focused on the teachings of yoga and Vedanta. His own master was Vishwānanda Saraswati which obviously influenced his beliefs and teachings. Swami 
Sivananda left India for Malaysia to study medicine where he also practiced medicine and returned to India in 1924.

On his return to India, with an immense desire for spiritual growth, he devoted himself to the search for his guru. He spent time in the city of Varanasi and in 1924 headed north to the Himalayas to settle in the holy city of Rishikesh. There he met his guru, Swami Vishwananda who initiated him as a quitter and gave him the name of Swami Sivananda Saraswati. 

During this period, he began an intense period of meditation, austerity and spiritual practice. Other denials began to gather around for inspiration and spiritual instructions. An ashram was developed around him, which was established in 1932. In 1936, he founded the Divine Life Society and in 1948, the Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy. 

Swami Sivananda made long journeys throughout India and Sri Lanka, teaching methods for maintaining mental and physical health through the practice of asanas, pranayama and kriyas. Many people felt deeply touched by his magnetism and high presence. However, he did not travel extensively outside Rishikesh. The wisdom of his teachings and his extensive knowledge of Vedanta and yoga practices began to be known worldwide through his disciples and more than 200 books were written by him with very deep and transformative content. 

Swami Sivananda spent his last days of life in the Rishikesh, India and met to his maker leaving his followers in tears on July of 14 in the year 1963. Swami Sivananda left a wonderful legacy to humanity that survives today through different schools which were founded by his disciples such as Sivananda School and Satyananda in the spirit of love and service. 

Therefore, today India yoga stands tall in the whole world where people love to come and learn it from prestigious yoga training centers.
